Grouping pages into one image does not replace OCR, it feeds it better. Most extraction tools work per image, so a single composed page turns four calls into one and, more importantly, makes the sequence explicit in the pixels rather than in the file names.

Two layouts cover almost every document case. A 2×2 grid holds four small pages, which suits receipts, tickets and forms. A 1×2 grid holds two larger pages side by side, which suits invoices and contracts where the fine print matters. When precision on small print is the goal, fewer cells at higher resolution always beat more cells at lower resolution. The details that decide whether extraction succeeds: (1) straighten each page before merging, since a skewed photo degrades recognition across the whole cell, (2) crop to the paper, so the desk and the background do not consume resolution, (3) keep a gap between cells so the last line of one page is not joined to the first line of the next, (4) export at 3000px or more when the source is small print, because every character needs enough pixels to be recognised.

Then state the order when you run the extraction: a 2×2 grid with a reading order of left to right, then top to bottom. A tool that only accepts one image now has one image with a known internal order, and a tool that accepts several receives a single file whose contents you chose.

One caution: do not compress before extracting. JPG artefacts around thin characters are a common cause of a digit being read as a letter, and the error is invisible until someone pays the wrong amount.
